How do you know when to
take your home business
to the next level?

By Colin Dunbar

Are you thinking of taking the next step with your home business, and want to turn it into a formal small business - maybe move into premises in town? How do you know if it is the right thing to do? This will depend upon your vision and your goals for your venture. You need to have the desire to create a bigger business if you want to expand it beyond the confines of your home.

Home business vision

Your home business may pass through different stages of growth. The challenges will change with each stage and you need to overcome them to keep your customers and yourself happy.

When looking at expanding a home business you're always faced with a little hiccup. Expanding could inevitably mean moving to a more suitable location or building. If you've been pursuing the dream of running a business from home, obviously this step will draw you away from that vision and into something much bigger. And as so often occurs, bigger does not only mean bigger income, but also bigger responsibilities.

Before taking your home business to the next step then, you need to make sure that you are ready for the next step.

Steady cashflow

Expanding a business invariably brings with it extra expenses. You'll probably need to hire an assistant or employee to help you with managing your home business. While this is a good way of reducing your own workload, especially mundane, non-profitable tasks, it costs money. There will also be rent to pay, utilities, etc. Likewise there may be new advertising costs and administration costs.

Cash is king, and you need to make sure you have a good cashflow to facilitate this. If not, expanding your home business may just end up undoing all the good work you've done so far.

In conclusion, remember there is a difference between running a business from home and running a formal small business. Only you can decide which road you want to take.

The bigger your business becomes the more money, management, and attention it will need. Is this financially viable, and does it meet with your business goals? Carefully consider this before taking the next step.
