5 Basic Questions to Ask
When Starting a Business from Home

Starting a business from home is actually easy. Well, sort of.

Basically, you get the idea for a business, you get the stuff you need to start and run the business, and voila – you’ve started your business from home.

In a nutshell, that’s what starting a business from home is.

Then the real work starts.

A business needs customers, whether it’s a home business or a “formal” business in town; off-line or online.

Before starting a business from home, think about what will be needed. There’s no need to write a formal business plan, but if you don’t have the basics, it can help in your home business not turning into a flop.

Ask these 5 Basic questions when starting a business from home...

What business are you going to operate from home? No need to go into minute detail (at this stage), but also don’t write just a single line. When you explain your home business, think of the main things needed to start and run your business. Example: “I’m going to start a bookkeeping business from home, and will be offering this service to small businesses in my area.

What is required to run this business? Think of the things you’ll need in terms of equipment, materials, stationery, printing, advertising, fax, etc.

How will you market/advertise your home business? If you are even slightly serious about your home business, then this is very important. If people don’t know about you, your business will struggle to get off the ground, and it will always be a battle to run and grow your business. Spend some time thinking of how you’ll advertise and market your home business.

Who are your competitors, and how many are there? Knowing who your competitors are will place you in a position to offer a better service or products. Get to know what they charge, what their service is like, in what areas (if any) do they specialize? It may sound sneaky, but you can contact your competitors by making as though you are a customer – that way you can get the information you need.

How much time is needed to run this business? This is an important part of a home business, especially if you’re going start your business part-time. In the early stages, that is prior to actually starting, you will probably need to estimate the time needed. As you run your home business, keep tabs on the times taken, e.g. for the bookkeeping example above, how much time will you spend with a customer to do a tax return? Keeping a check on the time taken will help you as your business grows, in that you’ll be in a much better position to take on jobs, and you’ll know how many customers you can see in a day (which directly affects your income).

Answer these basic 5 questions before starting a business from home, and you’ll be much better prepared than a lot of home entrepreneurs. You’ll also save yourself a lot frustration (and possible disappointment).
